About NAIR HOSPITAL DENTAL COLLEGE

Nair Hospital Dental College is one of the oldest institutes in the country with a glorious history dating back to 1933 during the British era. The untiring efforts of late founder and Ex- Dean Dr. V.M. Desai gave rise to a dental college that now stands at par with best colleges both nationally and internationally. The institution made a humble beginning in a stable in 1927 at Topiwala National Medical College with only a single chair. In 1934. it succeeded into establishing three departments: Operative Department, Prosthetic Department and Exodontia Department with an increase in number of chairs and separate laboratories. The syllabus was initially based on American and German standards and the diploma of LDSc of one year. which was not only recognised by Government of India but also by foreign universities. In the year 1946, Municipal Corporation took over all the three medical institutions under whose wings the institution flourished. In 1951, a separate 5 storied building was constructed and included 76 dental chairs, well- equipped laboratories and X-ray machines. In 1954. the college was affiliated to the Bombay University of courses pertaining to BDS. In 1957, Dr. H.D. Merchant took over as the dean and with him ushered a new era in the history of Nair Dental College, making it the first dental institute offering post graduate courses in Orthodontia, Operative Dentistry, Prosthodontia and Oral Surgery. A new eight storeyed building was constructed opposite Maratha Mandir and the college shifted to its present site in 1971. Also, the building got an extension in 1980. In 1983, a new budding department came to the fore in the name of Community Dentistry. Later. in 1998, the college got affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.
